STAR STUDENTS: Every day a name from our class is randomly chosen, without the students knowing who was chosen. The adults will watch for hard work, appropriate behavior, acts of kindness, etc. Students who have a good day will have their name announced to the class as the “Star Student” or “Gum Winner,”and win a piece of gum for each and every member of the class. If the student did not have a good day, their name is returned without anyone knowing, and it is announced that there is no “Star Student” for the day. This gives everyone the opportunity to reflect on their behavior without anyone pointing fingers, and everyone gets a new chance the next day.
SUPER DOLLARS/KART CASH: Students earn these classroom dollars for completing homework on time, working hard, good grades, following directions, staying on task, acts of kindness, etc. They save and keep track their dollars in their “accounts” in school. Three times a year (December, March/April, and June) there are class auctions, where students have the opportunity to bid on items we’ve collected, passes, gift cards, etc. The students then keep track of bids and their accounts as well. The more money the students save, the more they have to bid on their most wanted items!
SNACKS/WATER: HEALTHY SNACKS and water are permitted during snack time (around 10:30 each day). Please do not sent in chips, candy or cake for daily snack. Students are only permitted gatorade if recommended by a doctor/nurse. Students can have a water bottle accessible throughout the day. Students are responsible to bring in their own snack each day.
BINDERS: Three-ring binders are required of all students, and they are responsible to bring them to school and home each day. In the binder will be reference materials (calendar, math reference charts, schedule, etc), a homework planner, homework, notes, etc. When they come into school in the morning, the students will bring binders into class to get ready for the day, and take their binder home each afternoon. Students are responsible to pack their binders into their backpacks each afternoon, to check their planner and binder each night, and to show their parents the binder, assignments, notes, and completed homework.
HOMEWORK: Homework is usually given Monday through Thursday. Rare exceptions occur maybe twice a year. If a student is absent, they have extra days to make up the work they missed, and this will be marked either directly on the homework or in their planner.
Homework not completed at home will be done at recess the next day, no exceptions. This way, no matter what the reason, work gets completed without arguments or worry. Homework not completed for three days or more will result in a phone call home.
